J1 autism-support regulation support SOP

A repeatable regulation-support procedure for preventing overload, supporting transitions, and keeping home-school readiness more consistent.

Purpose

Help the caregiver respond to regulation needs earlier and more consistently so the child has a better chance of reaching school and daily transitions in a more manageable state.

Core regulation principles

  • notice early signs before full overload
  • reduce intensity before adding more verbal prompts
  • keep transitions predictable
  • use the same support tools consistently

Early warning signs to watch

  • pace changes or visible tension
  • verbal resistance increases
  • avoidance or stalling
  • sensory sensitivity rises

Procedure

  1. Identify the early signs of overload before the transition point peaks.
  2. Use the agreed regulation support tool for that moment (for example: visual cue, quiet pause, movement reset, or sensory support item).
  3. Keep language short and consistent.
  4. Reduce additional demands until the child is more manageable again.
  5. Document what support was used and whether it helped.

What to document

  • trigger or context
  • warning signs observed
  • support tool used
  • outcome
  • whether the team should keep or adjust the approach

Validation path

Fewer escalations during key transitions and more repeatable support success across 2 to 4 weeks.
